7-bag Randomizer

The 7-bag randomizer is the piece-generation algorithm that defines modern Tetris. Rather than drawing each tetromino from an unbounded random pool, the system shuffles all seven unique pieces (I, O, T, S, Z, J, L) into a virtual bag, deals them out in random order, and only after all seven have appeared does it create and shuffle a fresh bag. This guarantees that no single piece can be absent for more than six consecutive drops, eliminating the long, frustrating droughts that plagued earlier generators.

Its role is foundational. Every Tetris Guideline tournament, every modern console release, and virtually every mobile or handheld title relies on it. By capping the maximum gap between appearances of any given piece, it shifts Tetris from a game of pure luck into one where planning, pattern recognition, and piece management are the dominant skills.

The effect on play was immediate and profound. The 7-bag randomizer works simply: all seven tetrominoes are placed into a bag, shuffled, and dealt one at a time. Once the seventh piece is dropped, a new bag is created and shuffled. No piece can appear twice until all seven have been dealt, so the longest possible drought for any piece is six drops.

This changes strategy fundamentally. In older randomizers, a player might go twenty drops without an I-piece and have no way to prepare. Under the 7-bag, if you have not seen an I in the last six pieces, you know it is coming on the next drop. Competitive players track bag position constantly, planning stacks that accommodate the guaranteed upcoming pieces. Casual players benefit too, because the game feels fairer and more predictable.
